Northern Michigan winters have been throwing us curveballs lately. What even is a "good" winter anymore? Is it the postcard image of snow-laden pines and bone-chilling temperatures? Or is it the milder version we've seen recently, with above-average temps and minimal snowfall? While last year's gentle winter was a boon for wildlife – deer, turkeys, coyotes, and other critters likely benefited from less stress and a healthier start to spring – it definitely wasn't the winter many of us remember from childhood. Snow up to our knees, seemingly endless shoveling… those were the days! But they also came with incredible opportunities for snowmobiling, ice fishing, skating, snowshoeing, and other classic winter adventures.

This year, the snow might not be piling up, but the colder temperatures have blessed us with safe ice for fishing and skating. The forests are transformed into winter wonderlands, perfect for hiking and exploring. And even with less snow, wildlife can still find food, evade predators, and prepare for spring.
At Ausable River Outfitters, we believe in embracing whatever winter throws our way. The beauty of the outdoors is its constant change, its endless possibilities. There's always something new to discover! Even at the end of January, a wealth of affordable winter activities awaits. Consider a scenic hike (snowshoes often optional!), try your hand at ice fishing on the Ausable River, or explore the tranquility of winter camping. Ice golf, shed hunting, and even fly fishing are also fantastic options.
